Today's Lab

Hi folks,

I hope everyone has had a chance to do the lab for today.  The bottom of the lab write-up talks about graphing and Excel.  Don't worry about that.

I do, however, want to see a graph.  Just do one graph. Please plot predators and prey on the same graph.
Let the x axis be the trials and let the y axis be the # of population.
If you need to, you can use two different numbering scales on the y axis.  For example, if you have a max of 200 prey animals but only a max of 10 predators, the predators are going to have a lousy graph, so you may want to use a different scale for both. So for example, your prey scale may go from 0 - 10 - 20 - 30 etc.  But your predator scale would go 1 -2 - 3 - 4 etc.

What I'm hoping you can see from the data is that the predator and prey graphs should follow each other's trends.  As one goes up, the other follows, up to a point.  Then as one falls the other also falls eventually.   The graphs are dependent on one another.

Hand this in through Canvas when you're done.

Let me know if you have questions.

Best,

Jim Mueller

Bio Reminder...

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you guys know that as of now, quite a few folks have not done their homework.  There are two assignments, one is a set of questions based on the lecture and the other is questions from the book.  They aren't due until tomorrow morning but I just wanted to make sure folks knew what was going on.

Also, tomorrow I'll be sending that link again like last week so keep your eyes on the email.  :)

"See" you all soon!

Ignore Biology Class invite

Hi folks,

I was testing some software and I think I accidentally invited everyone to a video conference for biology.  Sorry about that!

While I'm here however, be sure to log into your Canvas site to see your homework that's due this week.  It seems like quite a few folks haven't logged in yet.

The homework "quiz" for bio

Hi folks,

I'm still getting used to the Canvas quiz thing so this week's "quiz" is quite tricky to do well on.  Even if you get the right answer, if you don't get it EXACTLY right it doesn't give you credit.  I'm going to go in after you guys do the assignment and just mark the grade a full 100%.  Do the best you can, and be sure to study the answers so that you know what's right and wrong for future quizzes but don't worry about spelling errors or other minuscule problems.

Sorry about the frustration on this.  A lot of new stuff to learn in this new world of online grading.

Best,

Invitation to Canvas

Hi folks,

Quite a few folks still haven't signed up for Canvas at this point.  I'm going to resend the invitations.  The subject says "Canvas Free for Teachers" so please keep your eyes open for it.

I hope everyone is doing well out there!

Kingdom Chart

Hi folks,

Here's a nice chart of the important things to remember for the various kingdoms.  This will be useful for this week's homework as well as the upcoming quiz.

3/16 Biology update and a brand new technological update!

Hi everyone!

Our new experiment with our online biology class seemed to go well this morning.  I hope you all had a good experience with it as well.

Some more new news!  I've created a Canvas account which will allow us to do this distance class thing quite a bit easier.  Each week I will be posting all of the assignments and the grades to the site.  You all have access to your very own student pages so that you can keep track of your grades and the assignments that you may be missing.  This is new to me so please don't be surprised if there are some bumps in the road but I believe this will make things easier and more accessible for all of us.

You may have an email from the site already.  Please be sure that parents and students register for the site.  It's all free and is quite nice.

Your homework for each week will be posted to the site and (I think) you'll get notifications when new things get assigned.  No more hunting through your emails to try to find assignments!

Please be sure to sign up for the site as soon as possible.  Your homework is waiting for you!

By the way, quiz next week so be sure to study today's material (pay special attention to the homework) and be sure to spend some time with speciation as well.

Best,

Hi all,

I hope everyone is safe and well.

Thanks to the help of Susan and her husband's helpful tutorial this afternoon I feel I'm ready to give Zoom a shot!

So here's the deal, when you get a chance, go to zoom.us and sign up for a free account.  You can use your Google account or Facebook account if you wish.  When you sign up you'll be prompted to download a "Zoom App" for the computer (or the phone for that matter).   Once you have that you will be ready to go.

You will want to do this before class time tomorrow to make sure you're all set.

Before class tomorrow I'll email everyone with the class link and number.

There's no need to have your camera on so please feel free to keep those turned off.

Looking forward to "seeing" everyone tomorrow at the usual 10:00 time.

Something for today's bio class

Hi folks,

I'm sending this .pdf your way.  We are going to spend some time with it in today's class so don't worry about it at the moment.

BTW, I'll be sending the link to the room soon.

Biology class is CANCELLED for next week however....

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, due to Corvid-19 we are going to have to cancel class.

However,  I'm hoping that we can do a live virtual class via Zoom.  I'll be providing more information on this soon but hopefully this will work well and we can continue with our content and our quizzes.

Even if Zoom does not turn out to be a viable option, I plan on recording my Chapel Hill biology class and sending that recording out to everyone if needed.

As far as homework and quizzes go, that will continue as normal.  (Did I hear a groan?  :)  )  I'll send the usual homework email and I'll also send quizzes.  I'm presently looking for online methods of quizzing to make that easier for all of us.  If you have any information on that, please send that my way.

Be safe everyone and hopefully we will be able to get back together soon.

Best,

Jim Mueller

Hi folks,

The camera didn't charge for some reason so I didn't get a recording for our class.   However, this is the recording for my Tuesday class which covers the exact same material.
